How to Make a Jasmine Topiary

Last weekend as I got out of the car at my friend Lezley’s house, I was immediately greeted with a delightful fragrance. The wonderful aroma of Jasmine hit me as if I were swimming in it!

As I looked around I could see why…gorgeous pots of Jasmine lined the driveway and were strategically placed throughout her yard.

First thought that came to mind??….I have to do this!

I spend an enormous amount of time in my screened pool enclosure, (where I am now, throwing the ball in the pool between sentences for 3 spoiled Rotties) and imagined the Jasmine blowing in the breeze…filling my yard with loveliness!

Dave, Lezley’s husband has been growing his Jasmine for years, so it’s established. I wanted to create Dave’s effect but knew it wouldn’t look half as gorgeous for several years…gotta say…I’m pretty excited about how it turned out.

How to Create a Jasmine Topiary

Materials Needed

Large Jasmine Plant
I purchased the largest plant I found at Home Depot for $9.99. I could have bought a smaller plant but wanted a taller more established look.

Patio Pot ~Your Preference- These babies can be expensive for a more decorative pot. Since I was testing the waters with this project I just bought a large plastic pot for $9.99

Tomato Cage I looked at all types of trellis but wanted a cone effect….opted to go with a tomato cage! Lots cheaper than a trellis too…$2.89

Assembly

I repotted the Jasmine in the large pot. We placed the tomato cage over the Jasmine.

Drilled holes in the side of the pots and secured the cages with wire for stability.

He then cut the middle ring of the cage in three places, so I could weave the branches through without breaking them.

I weaved…he watched. Then I complained mentioned that the cage didn’t seem as secure since he ruined modified it.
Mr. Smarty Pants got a plain ole drinking straw and slid it over the cuts so they were secure again! (Todd is a person who you would want on Survivor…he comes up with the best fixes!)

They may not be as Fab-U-Los-O as Lezley and Daves yet… give em’ time…in the meantime, they smell heavenly! Wish this post had a Scratch & Sniff!

    Ditto the scratch and sniff option! It looks like jasmine could grow in the shade. I'm wondering if us northern gardeners could make a topiary and bring it inside for the winter. Hmm. I may try it as an experiment.

    Did you use more than one tomato cage stacked? It looks taller than my normal oi' tomato cage. Great idea and thanks for sharing! P.s. I read somewhere that they hate really wet potting soil – did you have any issues watering yours? Thank you

    I used a standard tomato cage Amy. The weather here in NE Florida keeps the soil pretty dry so I have not had any issues. The jasmine seems very hardy! (smells heavenly too)
